July Book Blowout over at Blue Archipelago

July 16, 2008

Mrs. S, over at Blue Archipelago, is hosting a July Book Blowout reading challenge. I’ve decided to jump in and see how many books I can devour, I mean, read! I set myself the goal of 9, which feels modest.

So far-I’ve finished: Something From the Oven, by Lisa Shapiro. I have to say, it started off fascinating, and then turned long-winded on each of its topics. Or maybe I was addled by the relentless bombardment of mini-marshmallows (even in tuna salad! GACK!) The final chapter, comparing and contrasting Betty Friedan and Julia Child, actually worked, but the rest, just wandered. Disappointing!

More July books:

How The Other Half Hamptons- Jasmin Rosenberg: breezy, boozy beach read. Twenty-somethings gone almost wild at a beach house share. Almost wild? I guess that would make them feral. Yes, that works.

The Divorce Party- Laura Dave: On their 35th anniversary, Gwyn Huntington and her husband, Thomas, are having a party to celebrate their amicable divorce. Only, with their son bringing home his fiancee, and tensions seething below the surface, not even the family’s money can keep social decorum going for long. Weirdly, reminded me of Gatsby. Same flavor of old money.

Little Face- Sophie Hannah: A chillingly nasty British psychological thriller, playing on a mother’s worst fears. Parts of it are stunningly cruel.

Dough- Morton Zachter. An odd little memoir that contrasts Morton Zachter’s poor, humble upbringing with his revelation, as an adult, that the uncles who lived like paupers were multimillionaires, and never gave his family a cent. Simmering resentments collide with nostalgia.

Not sure if Eat, Pray, Love counts, because I started it in June.

I am currently reading Shantaram- it is over 900 pages, and I’m about midway through, stuck, and reading magazines. Oops.

That makes 5.  Six if I finish Shantaram.  The thing is, I can probably wolf down a mystery or two to make up the total of 10 I promised myself.  Suggestions?
