SLA 2013: Day 0
Briefly, because it’s after midnight in my head, if not in my surroundings.
During a flight that arrived early (I know, crazy, right?) I found 2 other SLA-bound librarians. Don’t ask me how, it’s not like there’s a secret handshake. I swear! One happened to be sitting in my row… For the sake of the sanity of the lady seated between the two of us, I’m glad we only discovered that we were both librarians as the plane was heading in for a landing. Because the two of us talked shop across the poor non-librarian lady for the rest of the flight. He works at NASA and is heavy into the Physics, Astronomy and Mathematics division goings on. Must find out if being a librarian for those divisions involves being good at those subjects.
Met another librarian while having to navigate in a tiny aisle around the beverage cart, and nearly winding up in the lap of a very nice lady who turned out to be a corporate librarian. She gave me a rundown of all the divisions of SLA who will be having free lunches at various intervals. Super useful information!!!
Weather… grayer, and chillier than I expected. Glad I brought a sweater or two. It feels air conditioned even when not air conditioned!
Angie, a longtime family friend, who I haven’t seen in far too long, collected me at the airport, and was wonderful helping me get settled in my cozy little hotel room. It might be tempting fate to say that I think I can get from hotel to convention center and back, etc, without getting lost. Everything Really IS within walking distance. How very nice.
Also within walking distance: Tin Fish, a really nice, casual spot for fish tacos and beer. Precisely what I needed. They had the Padres game on- did not know A was such a rabid fan. That was hilarious.
Wonderful fun to catch up with Angie. I’d only mostly ever seen her at big family gatherings.
Trying to persuade myself to stay up just a little longer so I don’t wake up at 5 AM or something silly.
