Billy Collins takes on Looney Tunes

July 3, 2008

It really doesn’t get any better than Billy Collins, riffing on cartoons. Poetry and prose interweave in this wonderful essay from the Wall Street Journal. Cartoon logic, imagery, childhood reminiscences. I would love to know how Billy Collins constructs his language. He makes language at once playful and cogent. I’ve had a great case of literary envy for years: both as a poet and a simple, everyday user of language.

Also, many, many thanks to my good friend who saved the article for me. I need to remember to read the WSJ. Maybe even subscribe. Mostly for the features writing, which I find consistently intriguing.
