A Muddle of Book Middles

December 10, 2008

I’m not usually a person who’s in the middle of several books at once. Or I wasn’t, until I started book reviewing. Now, books linger. After they’re finished, before they’re reviewed. They’re read, but not finished.
Also, I find myself in the middle of multiple books right now: two about computer technology- more detailed than I’m used to, though I get that someone more familiar with computers would love them. One sci fi anthology. I never know when I’m done with anthologies because they’re for browsing, reading stories as they catch my interest.

And then, a book showed up at the library. Lovely, and shiny in its laminated cover. My Most Excellent Year: A Novel of Love, Mary Poppins, and Fenway Park

Sassymonkey reviewed it
, and I was intrigued. Despite my TBR pile and my TBW (to be written) pile, when I picked it up from the library, the first chapters seduced me. It’s wonderful, funny YA prose, full of eccentric characters. I read, no, gobbled, three chapters, then looked up guiltily.
I will keep this by my bed. I will get motivated to hack at my assigned reading. But man… this book is good, and I’m enjoying the slightly guilty “hiding a novel behind the textbook” rush.
I don’t remember ever doing that in school, however. I did read Harry Potter under my desk at an office job once.
