Booking Through Thursday: Taking Breaks

March 25, 2010

btt button asks…

Do you take breaks while reading a book? Or read it straight through? (And, by breaks, I don’t mean sleeping, eating and going to work; I mean putting it aside for a time while you read something else.)

Short answer. Yes, especially nonfiction. I feel guilty when I do. More guilty if the book I’m reading and taking breaks from is fiction.I don’t know why. It’s not like the characters will notice that I’ve stopped paying attention to their lives. So it’s odd, but even so: guilty. Usually what happens is I’ll start it, wander off, and then come back months, years later, and read the whole thing. My reading is very whim-driven.

Nonfiction is easier to put down and pick up, for me. I’ve been reading Striptease, a history of burlesque, for over a year. I wander off. I read shorter nonfiction. I read novels. I review books. I come back to the nonfiction.
