Booking through Earth Day

For Earth Day, Booking Through Thursday asks:

It’s Earth Day … what are you reading? Are your reading habits changing for the sake of the environment? What are you doing for the sake of the planet today?

Most of what I’ve been reading today, and this week, has been about sustainability practices and green technology. Chiefly, as it relates to beer. My main Earth Day-related writing project for this week has been over on my beer pairing blog. I got curious about green beer brewing and consumption practices, and about things breweries are doing to be more Earth friendly.  Read the whole series here.

Sobering thought for beer drinkers: Global warming threatens crops of hops and barley.

Took a walk in the sun earlier, which, I guess, feels Earth Day-ish. A lot of the rest of what I do, daily and weekly, isn’t all that green.

Think about it– the writer’s life is a very electronic one in this day and age: computer, cable modem, printer. (I try not to print too much!) Phone and gadgetry. Living in a major metropolis, I see giant energy-sucking practice around me all the time. Along with nifty green technology and architecture, which I find fascinating.  Feel-good science.

I’ve always wondered why store lights stay on at night. And why stores blast AC and then leave their doors open.  And gyms? Every day I see crazy, needless uses of energy. Televisions show videos nobody’s watching. Treadmill lights flash, even when nobody’s running-to-nowhere on them.  Harsh, industrial lights, even on a sunny day.  (Okay, that I get- exercisers’ privacy demands that you screen the giant floor to ceiling windows, but I wish they’d let the sunshine in.) Since gyms are giant and have to be kept clean, there’s no way to use green cleaning products I suppose. (Though the chemicals are smelly.)

Great post about Earth Day! I did a report about Earth day too, it was an office thing and I had to make a design for eco-friendly chairs. Yep, chairs.
