Sneaking up on Harper Lee

May 25, 2010

To Kill a Mockingbird turns 50 this summer. There will be commemorative readings and events all over, especially in the South. I would love to see a staged reading adaptation, though a lack of Gregory Peck as Atticus would be a massive disappointment. To Kill a Mockingbird is one of the few movie adaptations of a book that did the book justice. I expect we’ll see a lot of press about Harper Lee being reclusive, maybe speculation about why she only wrote the one novel.

I also like this recap by Jezebel, including a quote from Banksy: “I don’t know why people are so keen to put the details of their private life in public; they forget that invisibility is a superpower.”

Someone ought to mail that to Lindsey Lohan.

Inevitably, there’s a comparison between Harper Lee and her reclusive character Boo Radley. I don’t buy it. But it puts this Bruce Hornsby song in my head. “Sneaking up on Boo Radley.” I’d post video, but the only one I found has terrible sound.
