Booking Through Thursday: Signature

June 10, 2010

Today’s Booking Through Thursday asks: Do signed copies excite you? Tempt you? Delight you? Or does it not matter to you?

Normally, I would say that signed books don’t excite me all that much.

With a few exceptions. If I get a chance to meet the author of a book I really loved, and have the book personally signed, that thrills me. And makes me smile years after the fact!

Although it’s not really the done thing, I like to bring a book to a book signing, rather than buy it there. I would rather have the copy I’ve read and loved get signed. Spider Robinson signed my battered copy of Lady Slings the Booze. I bought a fresh copy to read afterward, because now I really, really don’t want it to fall apart.

Sherman Alexie's autograph, to Elizabeth, with a Z in the middle.

About seven years ago, Sherman Alexie signed my copy of Reservation Blues. It’s my favorite book of his, possibly one of my favorites of all time. And when he was writing my name, I said “it has a Z in the middle.” Because some people spell it with an S. He Zorro’d it. I was delighted!

And just last week, I went to Karen Healey’s book signing. I was absolutely over the moon, because she remembered reading my book review of Guardian of the Dead. Turns out that Tam Lin, one of my favorite books, which I thought of while reading Guardian of the Dead is one of Karen Healey’s favorites as well.Which will explain what she wrote in my book… she’s not propositioning me, I promise.

"Let's have a mild sort of orgy," which is a line from Tam Lin.

Me, realizing that she was writing a personal in-joke for a fellow Tam Lin fan.Happiest Fangirl Ever!

Love that you posted pics since I did too! I enjoy getting signed copies of books I love. It brings back not only a story memory, but a memory of the day I received the signature.
