Booking Through Thursday at the Beach

July 29, 2010

One of my favorite Booking Through Thursday’s in a long time!

Which fictional character (or group of characters) would you like to spend a day at the beach with? Why would he/she/they make good beach buddies?

I can tell I’m going to be daydreaming and revising this answer all day. One of the things that makes a book my favorite is that I get attached to the characters, and wish I could actually be part of their world. I remember one of my favorite books as a kid was The Secret Life of Hillary Thorne, where she actually had the power to go do that, to be in books.

But who would actually be fun at the beach? The regulars at Callahan’s Crosstime Saloon seem like an obvious choice. They are a crowd of friends who love puns, good beer, take good care of each other, and are handy to have on your side in case of time travelers, psychics or alien apocalypse.

I would also invite young wizards Kit and Nita, and their supervisors, Carl and Tom, because Kit and Nita deserve a day at the beach when they’re not trying to save the world, and I wouldn’t mind an excuse to hang out with wizards. In a similar vein, only one Hogwart’s student: Neville Longbottom. He was always my favorite, and I feel like he deserves a day at the beach of his very own because of how often his courage got eclipsed by the Big Three Harry Potter Characters. (No I’m not trying to set him and Nita up on a date.)

For practical considerations– a good day at the beach needs tasty snacks and/or a good family dinner afterward. Fortunately, foodie fiction is one of my favorite genres. Topping the guest list would be Sunshine and her delicious baked goods. I know Lillian, who runs the restaurant in The School of Essential Ingredients, would pack an outstanding picnic lunch. Gus and Oliver of Comfort Food would also provide tasty delights.

Most important of all– I’m pretty sure any of these characters would fit in quite happily with the other people likely to be at the beach with me: my friends and family. And there is nothing I love better in fact or fiction than the chance to introduce people I love to one another, and have them enjoy fun and great food together.

The only one of those that I know is Neville. I did think of another character from the Potter books – Hermione. Partly because we could have a good talk about books, but I’d also like her to bring the handbag she used in the last book to pack all our stuff in that we’d need for the day at the beach. And when we’d had enough she’d just be able to apparate us back home…

“Sunshine” is the second Robin McKinley recommendation I have seen this week (The other was a Teaser Tuesdays entry about “Beauty”). It seems the time has come for me to finally read her.

I, too, chose a foodie character for this week’s BTT question – fresh sea air always makes me hungry!

All those characters are unfamiliar to me (although I’ve heard of Harry Potter, of course). But I agree, a “foodie” character would be the ideal beach buddy! Except that I had a hard enough time getting into that swimsuit – don’t think I could afford any extra pounds right now!

    Good answer!
