30 Day Book Meme: Day 1

August 13, 2010

Catching up on the 30 Day Book meme from the Book Memes and Quizzes comm on LJ.

Day 01 – A book series you wish had gone on longer OR a book series you wish would just freaking end already (or both!)

I can answer this question with the same author for both parts! wish Laurie R. King would write another Kate Martinelli mystery. I love that series. I love the characters. The plots just kept getting better and better. The last one, The Art of Detection (Bantam, 2007) was particularly interesting, weaving Sherlock Holmes lore into the series’ customary modern San Fransisco setting. It was so good. And she hasn’t written any more! Woe!

Which brings me to the flip side: There are too many Mary Russell/Sherlock Holmes mysteries. Too many! King keeps writing more. I was dubious of the series from the beginning… although it’s decently written, the premise bugs me. An aging and retired Sherlock Holmes meets young Mary Russell. They solve mysteries together. At times, her character makes me wince. It’s like Holmes fanfic!  Well-written fanfic, but still. I would prefer Irene Adler, who’s at least canon, to be Holmes’ female cohort. Or… write historical fiction about a whole new detective, and explore the legacy of Holmes in interesting ways against your new character.

I may at some point go back and give the series another chance. I would have preferred them to have a platonic partnership, because the evolution of a Russell/Holmes romance was the most forced and fanfic-like.
