Book Meme Day 9

August 19, 2010

Today’s Book Meme asks: What is the best scene ever?

This is harder for me to answer than the usual best.

It’s hard for me to think of books I love as being divided into scenes. I’m reading, and I’m entirely in the book’s world. The best books make me feel like I’m following the characters around, seamlessly. So I love the whole atmosphere. The whole historical setting of the Pink Carnation series. The magic system of the Young Wizards. The Yorkshire farm life of James Herriot. The sheer zaniness of the Westing Game. Neil Gaiman’s America, where old gods still wander and go on road trips.

There’s a plot in All Things Bright and Beautiful that might come close to being my favorite.

The Raynes ghost.  Who is not, as you may expect, actually a ghost. Even thinking of the ghost picking up his monk robes and running for it, makes me giggle. So perfectly silly.

Of course, having made that my answer, I’m going to spend the next several days thinking of other great scenes.
