30 Day Book Meme Days 13-15

August 26, 2010

And you thought I forgot about the 30 Day Book Meme?

Well… Okay, maybe I did, a little.

But! Answering three in a batch was part of my plan. Because they’re variations on a theme:

Day 13 – Favorite childhood book OR current favorite YA book (or both!)

Day 14 – Favorite character in a book (of any sex or gender)

Day 15 – Your “comfort” book

In some form or another, the answer to all three is:
The Westing Game, by Ellen Raskin.

I first read it when I was eight, and have read it yearly (or more) since. So it came with me from childhood. It’s comforting to linger over in rereading, or to zoom through in one long insomniac night. It’s comforting in its familiarity, and also in the fact that I keep noticing new details, or new ways of thinking about the plot and characters I know so well.

Favorite character? Turtle Wexler. Because the thread of the book lets her grow up in all kinds of ways. Slowly coming into her own, in the odd family of Westing “heirs,” living at Sunset Towers. Jarred into action by the way the clues lead. And then, in the book’s final moments, we see the adult Turtle has become- playing chess, practicing finance and law, and still devoted to her very best friend.

Yes, I’m being oblique so as not to spoil, because if you haven’t read this, you absolutely must.
