Book Meme Day 27

September 6, 2010

Here’s the book meme du jour
Day 27 – If a book contains ______, you will always read it (and a book or books that contain it)!
I have a few that will always grab me:

1. Foodie lit. Memoir, fiction, cookbook-with-essays, professional chef or home cook. Some favorites: The School of Essential Ingredients– Erica Bauermeister; Comfort Food, Kate Jacobs. Like Water For Chocolate, Laura Esquivel. Liquor– Poppy Z. Brite.

2. Forensic anthropology and science. Murder + skeletons + biology + crime = I’m reading it.  Favorites: Aaron Elkins’ Gideon Oliver mysteries. Kathy Reichs, the Temperance Brennan novels. (Wildly different from their TV show adaptation, Bones.)

3. Historical fiction set in 19th century New York or Regency England/France. Bonus points for ballrooms, police work, or magic. Favorite authors: Lauren Willig, Caleb Carr, Marissa Doyle. Also, WWII historical fiction.

4. Fairy tale/fantasy themes in a modern setting, and/or fairy tales adapted/retold. Robin McKinley is one of my favorites. Also, any retelling of Tam Lin, ever.

5. Medicine of a bygone era, or health and social history. Can barely watch Scrubs without flinching, but I enjoy accounts of 1960s-and-earlier medicine. James Herriot. Patrick Taylor’s Irish country doctor. Also nonfiction.

6. Pithily written social history of any sort. But it has to be breezily written, narrative nonfiction. Travelogues, social histories, cultural studies, women’s studies. The kind of thing that gets on bookstores’ “odd, neat stuff” tables.
