The Book-a-Thon begins

April 9, 2011

Hour 1 Questions from Shesten at the Book A Thon.

1)Where are you reading from today? I’m reading at my parents’ place on Long Island.
2)Three random facts about me… When I was a kid, I met and interviewed Ann M. Martin, author of the Babysitters’ Club. My two favorite bookstores are Partners & Crime and the Corner Bookstore, in NYC. I’ve read The Westing Game, by Ellen Raskin, over 40 times I think.
3)How many books do you have in your TBR pile for the next 24 hours? 12, but I know I won’t get to all of them.
4)Do you have any goals for the read-a-thon (i.e. number of books, number of pages, number of hours, or number of comments on blogs)? My goal is to sleep as little as possible and read about 6 books. Also, see if I can interview one of the authors by email after I finish her book.

Woke up just a little before 8, just in time to blunder around the kitchen and make tea, eat cereal. I’m about 100 pages into The Bonus, by Georgia Lowe, which I started last night. There are definitely things I like about it- gets at interesting point in U.S. history. I didn’t know that WWI vets marched on Washington, demanding the bonus check they were promised by the gov’t.

At first I was intrigued that Lowe was writing about, among others, her own stories, or the story her parents told her. A mixed bag- at times, she’s got the characters right on and real, at times it gets a little dry and off balance. Then again, could just be picking up on physically dry– vets marching from L.A. to D.C. across a very hot summer. It reminds me of reading The Grapes of Wrath- same stifling hot scenery almost stifling the reading.

Now, probably going back to bed. With my book and my tea.

Will resurface in an hour or two, and read blogs from other Read-a-Thon folks.

I blundered around in the kitchen this morning too. I got up the same time I get up for work, but something about it being Saturday made my brain stop working 🙂 Happy read-a-thon!
