Booking Through…Saturday?

April 23, 2011

Hm. It’s been a long, busy, week. Guess I missed this on Thursday.

btt button asks

CAN you judge a book by its cover?

I’m not sure this is the right question. Can I judge a book by its cover? Absolutely. I do it a lot of the time! Especially books I haven’t read, or decided to read yet.

Should I? Well, as with the adage this phrase has become– it’s a bad idea. I mean, I think of some of the books I’ve read because they were recommended or by an author I already love. Some of the covers were just beyond silly. Especially the science fiction. Can’t blame scifi covers for being terrible. It’s probably very hard to do some kind of visual rendering of an imaginary creature the author has described, in a way that would intrigue a person who hasn’t read the book.

The reviews at Forever Young Adult, a terrific site about YA books as read by adults, riff on covers beautifully. Because YA covers are another place where things get ridiculous. Swoony romance, headless girls, these are the books a thirtysomething would feel a little sheepish reading on the subway.
