Looking for A Few Good Audiobooks

July 31, 2011

I am in need of audiobook suggestions. I use audiobooks to help me fall asleep.

James Herriot works rather well.  I’m familiar with the story, and I like Christopher Timothy, the reader. He has a nice, slightly gravelly voice, and a British accent. I also like Patrick Taylor’s series about Barry Laverty, the doctor from Ballybucklebo, Ireland.

I am looking for- stories read by men with nice voices, deeper voices and British/Irish accents a plus. Weirdly, female readers don’t get me nearly as sleepy. Not sure why.

Book recommendations need not be tied to the medical profession, either. Though that’s been a trend so far in books I’ve liked.

It doesn’t have to be a book I’ve read before, either. With the right, nice voice, an unfamiliar story will put me right to sleep.

Other preferences:

Somewhat funny is fine, but consistently hilarious might interfere with the sleep. I don’t dare try Terry Pratchett for example.

Some suspense is fine, but minimal violence and scares. We’re looking for bedtime stories here.

Memoir would be good, travelogue, even history. Or narrative fiction.

I just signed up for Audible.com, and the sheer number of titles is a bit overwhelming! So I turn to you, interwebs!
