In Edinburgh, Reading About Libraries

August 13, 2011

I made it to Edinburgh, and spent most of today taking naps to recalibrate from jet lag, also exploring the neighborhood.

Dad found the following in an essay by Alan Bennett in The Daily Telegraph’s book review section:

“In the current struggle to preserve public libraries not enough stress has been laid on the library as a place not just a facility. To a child living in high flights, say, where space is at a premium, and pace and quiet not always easy to find, a library is a haven.”

Alan Bennett is the author of numerous essays, and most notably the play The History Boys, which I love.
