Booking Through Thursday 9/22

September 22, 2011

Today, Booking Through Thursday asks:

btt button

Do you carry books with you when you’re out and about in the world?

And, do you ever try to hide the covers?

Answer to the first part: All the time. A paperback fits nicely in my little go-everywhere bag. A large hardcover book fits… rather less nicely, but I’ve managed. I think my personal best might have been wedging Old Gods Almost Dead, a 624 page Rolling Stones bio, in there. It was a tight squeeze. It was a good book.

I bring a book to the store, on the train, to work, even to the grocery store (especially to Trader Joe’s.)

As for book covers, that varies. On the one hand, I mostly don’t care whether people see what I’m reading. If they’re friends of mine, they know me, and will sometimes be reading the same things. If they’re not people I know… what does it matter? They don’t know me, and I might never see them again.

I even read Twilight in public! I clearly have no shame.

Having said that… I’m not likely to read too many books I’d feel embarrassed to read in public. Mostly because I’d rather not be seen blushing bright red at whatever the book contains.

I’m a terribly nosy cover spy, myself though. On the subway, at the gym, wherever. I always try to sneak a glance at what people are reading. Sometimes, if it’s a book I really love, I can’t stop myself from interrupting and trying to start a conversation. I have no shame. Clearly.

And then, of course, there’s the whole e-reader phenomenon, which makes it impossible for anyone to know or judge what you’re reading. I think that’s kind of sad. All those conversations, opportunities even for a quick and friendly “hey! great book!” lost.

Even though a Kindle is so much easier to stuff in my bag than a giant hardback.

I’m such a cover-snoop! I’m always peering over peoples’ shoulders, or how about in commercials and magazines, when people are reading? I’m always trying to find out what is being read in those!
Haha, you have no shame! Though I agree–I hate when I’m sitting downstairs and I’m reading and the blushing comes on. I always slam the book closed (yeah, I’m sneaky like that) and fanning my face like, “Whew! Is it hot in here or is it just me?…” Which normally gets me a few strange looks.

I like sneaking a glance at what people are reading too, but I don’t like to be interrupted while I’m reading. Maybe it’s because I’ve only had bad experiences of that.

I will read anything in public too. No shame here either. Thanks for stopping by.

When our girls were younger, they would grab a book with ‘a pretty lady and a guy’ for me off of the shelf, because they saw me reading one of those at home…that was long ago! But too funny… hadn’t thought about that until this prompt!

E-readers do make it difficult to be ‘snoopy’…and I have disturbed people while they are reading a book that I had enjoyed!

    Thanks for Hopping By…
