Booking Through Thursday: Mystery or Romance

December 8, 2011

Today’s Booking Through Thursday asks:

All things being equal, which would you prefer–a mystery? Or a love story?

A mystery. I’m much more picky about romances than mysteries. For me to enjoy a mystery, it can be almost any time period. I like the things that are important to the genre- a strong sleuth character, a good sense of place, sometimes bringing in an interesting knowledge base like forensics. A good puzzle. Hard to go wrong, with any of these things. And generally if I’m in a mystery mood I’m easy to please.

With romances, on the other hand, I’m super picky. It’s probably telling that my favorite romantic comedy is Grosse Point Blank…There needs to be good banter, a strong female heroine who’s smart and outspoken enough to call the hero on his brooding. With romance, I really need there to be some other plot driving things, other than boy meets girl and they kiss. And I’m picky about how the romance plays out (some sex scenes are just embarrassing! Yikes). If the alchemy of the plot ingredients goes off balance, I’m going to roll my eyes a lot, and mutter things as I read.

Fortunately, Lauren Willig and others are writing smart, funny, historicals with banter and spies. So if I want to read romances, the specific subset of the genre I’m after is well stocked.

I’m with you on the kinds of romance I can stomach…nothing too gooey. I like my female characters to be strong, opinionated, etc.

Mystery wins out, but I don’t mind a little of romance (if it’s the kind I can stomach! lol).

    Mysteries are more exciting.
