Dewey’s 24 Hour Readathon Hour 14 Mini-Challenge: Mashups

April 23, 2016

imgres-1.jpg

We’re 14 hours in! More than halfway!
Hooray for books, snacks, blogs, tweets and merriment!

By now, you may have read so many pages and Tweeted so many Tweets that things are starting to get… a little bit blurry and mushed together.

So you’re definitely ready for a break, and in the right, slightly silly frame of mind for Hour 19 Mashup Madness Mini Challenge.

Who doesn’t love a good mashup song?

A clever DJ mashes up the vocals from one song, the catchy hook from another. Together, they’re even better and more fun.

Like this Green Day + Oasis (for my fellow 90’s kids):

Here’s how to play the Dewey version:

Take two books. Mash their titles and plots together into one blurb. Share the result.

For example…

The Princess Bride by William Goldman + Pride and Prejudice by Jane Austen

Cover image, The Princess Bride by William GoldmanCover image, Pride and Prejudice by Jane Austen

Princess Bride and Prejudice:

Elizabeth, the most beautiful and smartest of her sisters thinks a mawwiage with Dread Pirate Darcy is Inconceivable, even though he has an Inheritance of Unusual Size…

Like Water For Chocolate by Laura Esquivel + Water For Elephants by Sara Gruen  =

Likewaterforchocolate.jpegWater_for_elephants.jpg

Like Water for Chocolate Elephants:

The cook with a traveling circus pours her emotions into her recipes, even finding love and convincing Rosie the Elephant to perform tricks.

Do it with books you’ve read today, or do it with favorite books on your shelf.

Mash two titles together, and share the resulting book description.

Share your mashups in the comments on this post.

This contest will run from now until I fall over from exhaustion 2 AM ET.

Two winners will be selected to win a random grab bag of 3 paperback books from my stash. (US & Canada only.) Winners will be announced after the Readathon.

Let’s get this started with a mashup dance party. Blondie’s “Call Me” + The Temptations “Get Ready” = awesome.

Looking forward to seeing your title combinations!

    Bitten Sharp, Twelve Dirty:

Elena Michaels is the world’s only female werewolf. And she’s tired of it. Tired of a life spent hiding and protecting, a life where her most important job is hunting down rogue werewolves. Tired of a world that not only accepts the worst in her–her temper, her violence–but requires it. Worst of all, she realizes she’s growing content with that life, with being that person.

    FIRST A STRANGER APPEARS
While chasing down the usual cast of miscreants and weirdos Elena discovers that a crazed woman is stalking her.

THEN THE STRANGER REVEALS HER SECRETS
The woman dresses in black, carries a 9mm Glock, and has a bad attitude and a mysterious connection to dark and dangerous Carlos Manoso …street name, Ranger.

Ranger is the exact opposite of the picture perfect, respected businessman she thought she’d marry. This former musician-turned-bartender is rough around the edges and unsettled. But she already tried Mr. Right and discovered he’s all wrong-maybe it’s time to give Mr. Right Now a chance.

After all, what’s wrong with getting dirty?

Both find themselves working in the prison kitchen, where Ashanie is charged with teaching an uninterested Scarlet how to cook. Ashanie is sweet, kind and calm, but Scarlet thinks only of herself, holding Ashanie in low regard. Ashanie relates a plan for escape to Scarlet. The prison matron has a fondness for Monte Cristo sandwiches and always orders a large order on Sundays delivered to her office. Ashanie plans to deliver the sandwiches and jump from the matron’s office window, off the island, and swim away. She invites Scarlet to join her in her escape. Scarlett knows that the odds of them both escaping are slim to none, so she sabotages Ashanie and escapes alone. Unfortunately, after jumping into the water, Scarlett realizes she cannot swim and her last words before sinking below the surface are, “Wherever shall I go? Whatever shall I do?”
